I was at a long stop light this morning - my oil light needle started going crazy - flipping up and down at lightning speed. I put car in neutral, and needle stopped at center like it should. When I got to my desitination a block away, it smelled like a little burning oil. Car needle was fine rest of way home, no smell.
Could this be oil pump? Or is it something bigger? It is intermittent. Have not noticed it before, but my son said it has happened to him a few times.

Hi:
I don't think it is the pump. My first guess would be a bad connection at the oil sending unit or a bad sending unit. Start there.
