Yes it is pretty straight forward, the only possible problem is getting to the wires on the Solenoid.

Electrical problem 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 140000 miles

Hey guys. it seems my starter in my 94 explorer has gone out and i want to save the money by replacing it myself. i am looking for detailed step by step intructions 2 repair this problem.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Removal
Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise vehicle. Disconnect battery cable from starter. Disconnect starter solenoid wiring. Remove starter mounting bolts or nuts. Remove starter from vehicle.
Installation
Position starter assembly onto flywheel housing. Start bolts. Hold starter against mounting surface, fully inserted into pilot hole. Tighten bolts or nuts to specification.
Connect battery cable and solenoid wiring to starter. Tighten to specification. Lower vehicle. Connect negative battery cable. Check starter operation.

Some of the bolts and nuts can be difficult to remove look for a place to use a universal and long extension works pretty good.

Need the schematic for removing and re-intalling Starter for 1993 Ford Explorer Sport 5spd Manual, 4.0 Litre,4x4, Original Starter.

remove the battery cable. lift truck for access. remove the battery wire and the small wire from ignition switch. remove 2 attaching bolts and remove the starter motor.

I have the bolts out of the starter, but can't seem to wiggle it out. Not enough room.
Do I have to remove something else to get the starter out? This is a 96 with a V6, 4-wheel drive.

Are you sure you got all of the bolts out sometimes they put them on the top were you can't see them. I've had too replace mine several times and it is a tight fit. If you take a screw driver and find an opening you can pry it out a little. and it should just pop right out.

I need to know what socket size I will need to remove the bolts from the starter, and how to remove it.

Inspect and test the starter relay,starter motor and ignition switch

A relay and a solenoid do the same thing. You'll do a lot better listening to Ras and not the sales clerks at Autozone
