how can i tell if they need replacing and do i need to change both l& r sides

Bad CV joints are easy to identify. Go to a parking lot where there is a lot of room. Turn the steering whee all the way and drive slowly. IF the joint is bad, you will hear a clicking sound coming from a bad joint.
