Following the replacement of plugs, leads, coil pack and upstream O2 sensors, I have been advised that the misfire on my Ford Explorer is probably down to clogged injectors and I should have a fuel injection service.

Can you walk me through how to do this and what special tools (if any) are involved? So far my experience of maintaining fuel injection systems has been limited to the mechanical Lucas systems of the 1970's.

Hi there,

Thank you for the donation.

Modern fuel injectors can be cleaned on or off the car, but the equipment needed is normally out of the price range of the home mechanic, (and some workshops as well) they are sealed units and are normally ultrasonically cleaned and then flow and leak tested. some can have the pintle heads replaced, but the quickest option if you want to do this your self is fit re-co change over units, they are normally as good as new and if you are running with faulty injectors they will pay for then self in no time.

Thanks for you reply Mark, can you give me a little more information on how to remove the injectors and how to check to see if they are functioning correctly or not?
I don't really want to put it back into the shop (been expensive so far, the vehicle is in the UK now and there is a reluctance to work on US models) until I have established what the fault is.

Thanks,

John

Hi there,

It is almost impossible to test injectors with out a suitable test rig, and you need to measure delivery and spray pattern, you can listen to them operate, this is just a clicking noise, but you do need the test rig to check for correct operation. As for removal, i will have to find some information on this for you, i will be away for a day or two so don't worry if you don't see anything, i will do it as soon s i return.
