I have appx 275,000 miles on 1996 Ford Explorer with the 302. I am about to drop a crate engine in and boost the power to make fun again. But 1st I want to get it riding more like it used to when new. For years, I have felt and heard what I would consider a hard clank (on real hard bumps maybe one hard metal clank and then a 2nd softer one.) It is definitely more of a clank than a heavy thud which I have seen on some other questions. Wheel bearings have been checked, shocks replaced, rocker arms replaced, etc but the feel and sound never went away. Any ideas on this? Also, what suspension items should be replaced due to age. Rear springs have been changed and the soft goods (rubber bushings and such) in the front end were changed once.

Are there any specific circumstances that cause you to hear the noise? For example, when you use the brakes or hit bumps...?
