1996 Ford Explorer Starter, Solenoid or what??

1996 Ford Explorer

1996 Ford Explorer, battery fully charged, but when you turn the ignition, starter engages for about a half second then disengages. Will not fully turn the engine over. Just about a half rotation. Consistently does it, does not vary, so I first thought the solenoid or starter drive gear, but wouldn't there be some varying of the problem ie sometimes work, sometimes not? Could it be some type of electrical/relay/sensor/computer problem, but that is a guess. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance..

Hello,

It can still be a Battery problem, just because the battery shows a full charge doen't mean that it isn't bad. And it sounds like the batteries CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) are low. They are what is needed to turn the engine over. Try jump starting if it will jump then I would say that it is your battery. You can take it out and take to your local parts store and have them test it for you.

Good point. I know he charged the batt w/a charger, but he may not have jumped it. I will suggest that. Hate to seem him pull the starter and find out its something more simple. Thanks..
