My Explorer "Action Trac" 4WD runs great however I
now have a problem and think it may in the front end.
In 2WD everything is fine until I get up to around 47
mph. Then a thumping noise starts. It is not constant
but irregular. I thought it maybe a tire was out of balance . Rotated tires and the noise is still there. It is
coming from the front and I cannot tell if it is the rt. or
left side. I shift out of overdrive and the noise is still
there. I run it off road and both 4WD and 4WD low
work fine. Had the problem for 2 weeks now and it
seems to be getting louder.Any thoughts?
Many thanks,

You may want to check the wheel bearings. If you do offroading, they may have become contaminated or damaged. Check for looseness as well as noise.
