I just bought a 94 Ford Explorer form a private party. When I did the test drive, everything worked like clockwork. A couple of days later, I was driving home from work and I noticed that the check engine light & ABS light came on simultaniously. I drove slow to listen to the emgine, and I heard a hissing/grinding sound. As I stopped at a red light, the wheel pulled hard to the left right as I came to a complete stop. About two minutes later, I was making my way down the road when the truck suddenly made a loud CLANK sound, and the car felt like it stalled, but was still running. I managed to get it off the road, but I couldn't get it out of the gear that it was in when the clank happened. Even when the clutch is in the neutral position, it is stuck in gear. I can not put it in any other gear, and I cant get it to go into neutral. The truck had to be towed home, and now I am stranded with no ride... HELP!!!

I'm not sure, but we may be dealing with two different problems here. I will suggest something for you to try first to get us some more info. Set the park brake on the vehicle and then try to shift through the gears WITHOUT the engine running. Do this while pressing in on the clutch. Let us know whether you are able to shift through all the gears, just some of the gears, or the same problem (won't shift at all).

Hi Dave. I have tried to shift gears with the parking break engaged and the engine off as you suggested. The shifter will not go into 1st at all, 2nd will engage, but after a little coaxing, 3rd is no problem since I think it's stuck in that gear anyways, 4th is REALLY stiff & 5th is almost impossible. The actual gears don't engage though. The shifter will go through the motions, but will not actually catch. Should I try something else?
