Ford Explorer Sport 1994 2 wheel drive 190000+ miles 5 speed manual.
Was sitting for about a month, now driving 30 miles to new job 5 days a week. ran great before and for the first week. Now mostly during acceleration and before shifting (approx 2000 RPMS) the engine shutters and continues running. Today however, the tach bottomed out but the engine was still running. it would not rev up past 2000 but would reach a spot and begin to surge. (think it went into basic programming mode). I feel uneasy driving in city traffic with the engine doing this, i am leaning towards the throttle position sensor but best i can remember it was chaged out about 4 years ago. Any theroies or answers would be greatly appriciated.

HAs the check engine light come on? Have you checked fuel pump pressure?

yes the light does come on. i have found out that if i pump the gas slowly with the clutch engaged , it will reset and tach comes back. i purchased a scanner today and found out that the coil pack was not sending a good signal to the ECM. maybe i am headed in the right direction? kinda expensive, but at least i wont get ran over.
any suggestions?

well 180 dollars later still little progress. Replaced the ICM cleaned MAP and every other sensor i could get to except the EGR valve, and reset the computer, now i just have surging after 1700 rpms. TPS maybe?

Im about to pull my last three hairs out with this thing.

That is all the hair I have left (LOL). It could be the TPS, IAC, or the EGR. However, they usually kick the check engine light on.

Think I am gonna start with the TPS, even though i checked it the other night with a meter. i had good smooth increases in resistance, but it along with the EGR, hasn"t ever been replaced. at least it is drivable now, but only at speeds less than 55.

wish i could i tried something my brotherinlaw told me but it is pretty silly. i unplugged the tps and tried the accelerator. then plugged it back in, tried the accelerator again with no change. he said that this would verify that the tps is not communicating with the ECM, but i am hesitant to believe this. Will change it out anyway just for giggles and see what happens.

With the TPS disconnected, it should idle. However, when you hit the gas, there should be problems.
