Transmission problem
1994 Ford Explorer Two Wheel Drive Manual

Please send any info useful on replacing the clutch. The rpms seem to go really high when shifting and is just generally sluggish. Like its just "winding" out.

It's not that difficult for a backyard mechanic to do. I've done several. You have to drop the drive shaft, drop the trannie and transfer case if it's a 4x4. These are heavy, so get a good jack. You also need to support the motor while the trannie is out. Remove the clutch cover plate, then the pressure plate and pilot bearing. Don't forget to take the flywheel and have it faced. Since the clutch is slipping the flywheel definitely should be faced. When replacing the pressure plate, you don't necessarily need an alignment tool, as you can use a tapered broom handle, but they make life a lot easy. Just make sure the plate is dead center.Tighten ea bolt a turn like you would a tire until tight drawing the plate to the flywheel evenly. Then torque to 20 ft lbs. Reinstall is reversal. Buy a Hanes manual for 1991 through 2001 manual to make your life a bit easier. You can do this, but you will need the help of a friend w/trannie. Hope this helps.
