1993 Ford Explorer engine surging

1993 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

my 93 Ford Explorer starts up but then, when it is in idle, the RPMs surge from 500 to 1500 for 1-3 min or so, and then the car dies. I just replaced the starter, and it wasn't doing this prior to the repair. Could it have some thing to do with the other soleniod mounted on the fender?

Disconnecting the battery to replace the starter will cause the computer to lose it memory. It probably needs to undergo an idle relearning process-it has nothing to do with the solenoid

Relearning procedures:

Place automatic transmission in "P" or manual transmission in Neutral position. Ensure the emergency brake has been set and all accessories are turned off. Start engine and bring to normal operating temperature. Allow manual transmission vehicle to idle in Neutral for one minute. Allow automatic transmission to idle in Neutral for one minute and then to idle in Drive for one minute. Once initial relearn is complete, process will be completed during normal driving.


Honestly, I don't think you did anything wrong. It sounds like the throttle position sensor. Has the check engine light come on? Also, since you worked under the hood, check for vacuum leaks. Check for disconnected, dry rotted, or damaged hoses.
