i had just got done putting in a rebuilt engine in that has about 30,000 miles on it and got new gaskets on everything, new spark plug and wires, and new hoses, and i went to start it up and its idling really rough and it keeps backfiring all i hear is this popping sound, i thought maybe if i took for a little test drive it would go away but then the car just ended up stalling what could be the problem?

Check your spark plug wires. It might be as simple as two wires crossed

Be sure your wires are in the right order on the cap and the plugs. Check your timing using a timing light.

You don't have a timing light? Try loosening and twisting the dist. VERY slightly one direction, then the other. Scratch a mark on the dist. and the intake manifold before you do so you can put it back exactly where it was if this doesen't help. If you notice a difference twisting the dist either direction, clamp it down tight and test drive.
