for several months it would pop out of fifth gear but only some of the time. When it happened it was usually when I were to drive over 65 mph. But like I said it wouldn't happen everytime. then gas prices went way up I was worried about burning gas if I drove the freeway in fourth gear so I began physically holding the shifter in fifth gear which was difficult because it would try with strong force to pop out of gear but i faught hard to keep it forced there. Stupid thing to do, Then one day I was driving up hill in third gear and suddenly the vehicle started to over heat the temp gauge was quickly approaching the red and as I headed for the gas station (which was 1/4 mile up the road) suddenly the rpms went way up but I seemed to be loosing speed then i noticed a strong odor which was either the clutch or the brakes burning. I got to the gas station turned the engine off waited approx. 20 min. for to cool down then started the engine added anti freeze to the radiator got back behind the wheel to leave and noticed that the parking brake light was not lit even though the parking brake was engaged and for the first time ever a light reading "rear anti lock" was on. I released the parking brake I shifted into reverse accellerated but it wouldn't move, rpms went up but it would not drive. (the clutch and slave cylinder were replaced 2 years ago, its not leaking hydraulic fluid from the resavoir, the clutch pressure is good) yet when i shift into gear it wont drive. Also when the engine is off and the shifter in gear (any gear) the vehicle rolls as if its not in gear at all. also with the engine running the shifter can be shifted into gear position without having to push in the clutch pedal. my question: is it likely that I broke something in the transfer case because of all the times forcing it and holding it in fifth gear and thats what the problem is? and even though it appears to be shifting into gears its actually not becaue its broken. or has my clutch gone bad again?
