Brakes problem
1991 Ford Explorer Four Wheel Drive Automatic 230000 miles

I recently bought a 91 explorer. The brakes take a long time to bring the vehicle to a stop, and I have to floor my brake pedal to get the brakes to work effectively. The woman I bought it from said that the brake disks and shoes need to be replaced, but I dont really trust her diagnosis. Could I have air in my brake lines? Or do the brakes just need replacing?

It's not a big job to inspect all the brakes, better to be safe than sorry, if the brakes have plenty of material left, check the hydraulics, rear wheel cylinders, master cylinder and hoses, calipers, replace if any component is leaking, bleed system and check rear adjustment, check pistons on calipers are not seized, test for vacuum leak at booster, and booster operation, by pumping brakes with engine off, with foot on brake start engine, pedal should suck down a little, do all this and you should have great brakes.
