Hello and thank you taking your time to assist me in diagnosing what the issue is with my truck. This morning my wife called and stated the truck on board computer says engine failure. Check engine light is now on. She coasted to side of road, waited 5 minutes and started back up. Truck will run fine at idle a do a top speed of 5 mph now. Oil level is fine. Oil pressure is normal, according to gauge. Had it towed to Ford as it just came out of warranty.Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

I was pulled up behind a garbage truck pulled to the side of the street I started to pull around and pass the truck which has started to take off, I gave it some gas because of the steep hill we where going up, and that is when it started to lose power and the check engine light started blinking.

The flashing "check engine" light means too much unburned gas is going into the exhaust system where it will overheat and damage the catalytic converter. A spark-related misfire will cause that, and will also cause loss of power. Spark plugs and wires, when used, and ignition coils on Ford products, are the best suspects.

The place to start is by reading and recording the diagnostic fault codes. If the spark plugs were replaced recently, and you have individual ignition coils, and you get a single-cylinder misfire code, switch the ignition coils between that and one other cylinder. Erase the fault code, then drive the truck to see if a different misfire code sets for the cylinder you moved the suspect coil to.

My Check engine light just came on and I checked to ensure the gas cap was on tight - it was. Engine acts like it misses occassionaly while idling. How can I reset the check engine light or is this a common problem for the Expedition?

Hi there,

you will have to get a scan done to identify the problem that has trigged the fault code. When this has been identified & rectified the ECU memory can be cleared.

It could be many things. However, since the check engine light is on, I need you to do something. Take the car to the nationally recognized parts store and have them scan the computer. It will identify where the problem is coming from.

Let me know what you find.

I have a 2005 Ford Expedition 2WD 5.4L. Every once in awhile my wife or I will be driving and there will be no responce from the gas pedal. I have taken it in several times and it will run for a few weeks and then it does it again. Also, the check engine light is almost always on.

The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem. With a 1996 or newer and some 95 cars and you have an AutoZone or Advanced auto parts in your area, they will read them for free. Once you have these code numbers, we can be a lot more specific about what your problem may be.

I will have to check when I get home, but I have had this problem for awhile. I brought it into Ford 3 times already and they turn the Light off but it seems like they only fix the problem temporarily every time. Each time they fix something else, but it is always the same symptoms. I will get the previous codes and post them if I can.

it has to be scanned for codes to find the problem and you need a professional type scanner to get rid of the codes once they are fixed.

if there is no error in advance track then it may be a goround problem or module that is making it do that. with service engine light we need to know the code why it is on otherwise we cant help. Low tire warning if the sensors have been replaced and it has to be set up correctly- tire pressure are correct check fuses and such or get it scanned as that can be a module as well.

it's because you are parked on a hill it doesnt' do any damage just make noise because a 4000 pound vehicle is pressing against the gear making it noisy when it disengages it does absolutely no harm it is built to take that kind of thing.

Check engine light on

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.

I reciently had a cylinder mis-firing that appeared to only be a loose connection. That problem triggered a check engine light. I have been monitoring the code checker to see if the misfire reappeares and have noticed that I have 2 monitoring tests that have not run if I read the information properly as they keep flashing on the monitor.

I also have a yellow light indicating the non running of these monitors. I have cycled the car through several trips and after saving the data off the computer, I reset the computer. It has not illumintated the check engine lamp and there are no diagnostic toruble codes stored in the computer.

The tests are the catalist monitor and the EVAP system monitor. I just had the smog checked last week and it passed in all catigories.

Am I too worried about these test not performing or should I be looking for something that I need to do?

Could the smog check people done something in the course of their testing that would have created this problem?

If the car is running good, I would let it go unless the check engine light comes back on.

Well I guess that what I thought was loose connection turned out to be more than that.
the misfire on cylinder #8 is back.

I have checked for the sound of the fuel injector firing and that seems good and the coil over the plug has the proper resistance readings.
I have not pulled the plug as it is not in an easy location and I didn't have the time this weekend.
I guess that I will take it into the shop and have them look at it and see what happens.

BTW, the monitors did finally clear up.

I took it to the mechanic today and, of course, it worked fine for them. They went ahead and replaed the plug and coil. They stated that this is a common problem and this usually fixes it.

We will see if the problem comes back. There is no apparent damage or defect to either the plug or the coil assembly.

The coil appears to be good and the coil resistance was in line with the specs.

What should the resistance across the plug be? I can't get a reading on any scale up to 200k.

Could this be a problem?

There shouldn't be any resistance in a plug. At least noting you can get a reading of. Let me know if the problem comes back or if you have other questions.
