Engine Whining Noise

Can you describe the sound? Also, does it do it if the engine is both hot or cold?

It doesn't sound hot. It doesn't affect the performance of the vehicle. I still have lots of power. I notice yesterday that the sound is also heard at the idle which I didn't hear before.

I just thought of something else that may help describe the noise. It sounds like a standard car when backing up.

Ibased on your description (a standard trans in reverse) sounds like the power steering pump. Have you checked to make sure the fluid is full and if the sound is coming from there. An easy way to check for the sound is to remove the serp belt and start the engine to see if the sound is gone. If it is, that would be my guess at this point. NOTE: If you remove the belt, only run the engine for a few seconds. It will OVERHEAT and eventually kill the battery with the belt off. Also, it could just be low on power steering fluid.
