My epedition hesitates at times. I took it to the shop and they hooked up to diagnostic computer and told me the history shows the knock sensor is not working periodically and no need to fix it until it gets worse, because it is an expensive repair due to its location.

What does this sensor do and can i be sure the sensor won't just fail completely one day and leave me stuck in the middle of the road? How will I know when it is time to get it replaced?

The Knock Sensor's purpose is to retard the ignition timing when the engine starts detonating/pinging/knocking. it will mess with driveability/performance and at the end damage the engine if ignition timing is not controlled when needed.
