1998 Ford Expedition hatchback door won't open

hatchback door lock inoperative.
It is apparently broken inside. It appears to lock and unlock successfully, but it will not open.

How do I access the internal mechanism and replace the lock?

You need to remove the inner panel and check to see if something is broken or disconnected.
