drove about 300 miles on a ford escort wagon SE ('95) with 119k miles on it. religiously changed oil and just changed fuel filter.

however, car started feeling a little bit sluggish and made a broken muffler sound whenever I step on the gas to accelerate. also, a weird clanking sound when I try to accellerate. doesn't happen when the car is idling, although there have been some shakes/vibrations when I'm stopped at a light.

from NYC so I'm not used to having a car. is the the catalytic converter? or could it just be the muffler? what about the clanking?

nope. no engine lights or anything re: engine warnings. just the sounds like a clanging and the broken muffler sound, but it's coming from underneath the driver's seat.
