FORD ESCORT

We have a 2001 ford escort that was started without oil before we realized the oil pan was busted. It ran for a few seconds and shut off. Then after the oil pan was replaced it will not start. It turns over but will not start. The timing belt is fine and it is firing. We are wondering if it could be the fuel pump and how to test for sure to see if that is what it is without a lot of experimenting.

Hi Tawarren
You say that the car is firing so I'am assumming the car has spark. A quick way to check to see that the fuel pump is working is to listen to it. Have an assistant turn the key to the on postion ( Do not start the car) while you stay near the fuel tank and listen for the fuel pump running. If it is running you will hear it making a humming sound for a few seconds and then stop. This is normal If it does not make noise here are some things to check.
1. Check that the fuel pump fuse is good.
2. Check the inertia switch does not have to be reset. Check the owners manual for its location. It is either in the trunk or under the dash.
3. Check the fuel pump relay.
If all is good you may want to replace the fuel filter
4. Finally if you have a fuel pressure tester to check the fuel system and that the pump is suppling the proper pressure.
Good luck Backyardmechanic :)
