2001 Ford Escort gear shift button

The button on my gear shift lever will not go all the way in. I cannot change gears. It will not come out of Park.

I have a 95 escort wagon, and on the console right beside the gearshift there is a slot where you can insert a screwdriver and get it out of a jam. I'm only pretty sure, not totally.
