1999 Ford Escort Engine Compression

I have a 1999 Escort ZX2 with 144,000 miles. When driving I have a whining noise that lasts for about 5-10 seconds then quits. When I engage the clutch and rev the engine it quits only to come back seconds later. While trying to trouble shoot the problem I discovered that there is engine compression build-up in the crank case that is released when I unscrew the oil fill cap. I have replaced the PCV valve, PCV valve hose, serpintine belt, idler pulley, several of the worn out vacuum hoses as well as ran a can of Seafoam through the vacuum system. I am at a loss!!

The build up of pressure is a concern to me. Is there a vacuum at the PCV valve?

There IS vacuum at the PCV valve hose. I pulled the hose off of the PCV valve and added the Seafoam through there. It runs great but I'm afraid to drive it with the compression build-up for fear of blowing a valve cover gasket or something worse. It has me stumped!!

To an extent, some pressure is normal. If it is running good and the PCV is good, I would say drive it. The only thing that can cause excessive pressure to build is if the rings are bad, but if it running good, I would think everything is okay. I doubt it will cause the valve cover gasket to go. Just check it from time to time to see if any leaks have developed.
