Engine Cooling problem
1997 Ford Escort 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

My 1997 Ford Escort engine is overheating. I think it happen about a week ago when my coolant light had just come on and I was driving and all of a sudden I heard a bang and then I pulled over and coolant was leaking so I decided to call my road side assistance company to tow my car. The next day I went to pick up some coolant and put it in and there was no leaks so I drove it that night. It was driving but when I drove it, it had stopped at a stop light because the oil light had come on and I had to pull over and put new engine oil in and it started and it was driving good but then it began to stop again and the engine was getting hot. I didn't drive my car for about a week and I finally started it back up and drove it around the neighborhood and there have been no problems lately but the engine does get hot a times. I took my stick out and I think maybe I might have put too much engine oil in because the oil is way past the full marker. So do you think you can help me with my problem?

Smoke does come from the exhaust but only for awhile and I'm not losing any coolant either and the car drives fine but the engine is getting hot fast.
