1995 Ford Escort new brake master cylinder and transmission

We just replaced the brake master cylinder. Now the transmission won't move out of park (yes, we have a foot on the brake). I don't understand how the lockout mechanism works to know how to diagnose the problem. What do we need to do so that the car can shift out of park?

check the fuses for the brake switch, then check the shift lock actuator , it is below front of the center console.
