Engine Performance problem

My car will start up and idle fine, but when i go to accelerate the car hesitates, (it almost feels like the car is shut off) for about 1-2 seconds then a surge off acceleration follows. i've already cleaned the mass airflow sensor, changed the plugs and wires, and checked that the air filter isnt plugged up. Any idea what could cause this???
