I'm getting an acid buildup on my battery terminals which is preventing the car from sometimes starting?
Can I replace the terminals to correct this problem or is it a problem with the battery itself, that is throwing out this acid?
Any suggestions appreciated.

check the cables for continuity if they are bad replace them, check your battery with an ohmeter.
the acide build up may have cause shorted cell .
Test it, recharge it or replace it.
Sometimes battery failure is not the fault of the battery at all. It may be caused by a bad starter, a defect in the charging system, or just a loose belt.
Check those things too.
