locked lift gate

2001 Ford Escape, 60,000 V-6 . Lift gate will not unlock with either key fob or interrior controls . Problem is intermittent if key fob works then control works. Suspect accuator is going bad. However there is not a manual control to open gate. Any suggestion how to get gate open for testing and repairs. Thanks for your time.

this may sound dumb but we did it all of the time at the dealer , if you inside hatch release switch is operational , try crawling in the back and beat on the lower portion of the hatch panel while hitting the unlock button and see what happens , it may be the actuator is faulty , and while your back there you should hear the actuato working when the hatch release is pressed
