2005 Ford Escape studded snow tires

I had my car inspected locally at a tire place. I'm fearful of driving in snow, and asked the manager there about studded snow tires. He said to have all four tires studded for better control, but I've heard elsewhere that I only need the 2 front snow tires studded. Is this correct?
