2000 Ford Crown Victoria replacing ECM in P71

I need to replace the ECM in the car, but first I'm trying to do some research. The number on the current ECM is YW7F-EE. I understand that the YW7F is universal for this year, make, model, etc, and the EE has to do with the date of programing I think. I read that the higher in the alphabet, the more recent the programing. Does that mean that the EB, EC, ED will not work in this car? I bought an exact match at a salvage yard and it blew out several things, including a coil pack, and fan motor, and I had to put the original back in.
After I buy one, what about flashing? I'm not certain exactly what flashing does and if it's required.

You will want to stick with the EE version. You need to first retrieve the flash vehicle identification (VID) from your original module. To do this you need a New Generation Star scan tool or equivalent. If your original module is damaged or nonfunctional and can not be used to scan it then you will have to contact the "AS BUILT" data center (on label) for manual programming information. Do you have access to a scan tool to perform the VID procedure?

No. Is that one that autozone has that they will plug in and scan for you?

They do have them yes, but I believe they only use it for pulling trouble codes. I am not certain if they will let you use it for anything else, will have to ask them.

again, after much research, I followed links, and instructions from the motorcraft site, and found out this module already has the most recent calibrations. The EE is the most recent. So from what I understand, any module that is a YW7F-EE would not need to be flashed, but a EC, ED, etc would need flashing for use with this vehicle. Is that correct?
