1993 Ford Crown Victoria fuel gauge

i have a 1993 crown victoria. automatic. the fuel gauge works about half the time and it is worse. when i shut the power off, all of the other indicator needles drop except for the fuel guage. It just seems to get stuck in one spot. then sometimes a few days later it will start working. is the problem in the instrument cluster or the sensor in the tank? any help would be great

Hi, There Is A Test To Check The Gauge ,First Carefully Remove The Connector At the fuel Tank.Look For A Yellow Wire ,Ground This Wire With A Jumper Wire,To Metal Part of car, Next Turn Ignition On But Do not Start Engine,Look At Gauge ,See If It Goes All the way to full.,now Remove Jumper but Leave ignition on ,See If Gauge drops all the way to Empty.If Both Tests Are Ok It's Not the gauge ,But the sender in tank. If it Turns out to be sender In tank Also look in Tank And Make Sure Nothing Is in there but gas .Use a flashlight .Not a Drop light,And a small mirror To see In there.In order To Remove the sender The Fuel tank Has To Be About 1/4 Tank So all the fuel does Not come out .
