Brake lines are rusted, in the process of replacing them all

Brake lines are rusted, in the process of replacing them all, found that all the brake lines go through a box or block type unit on the frame under the car. 2 questions. 1. what is this box? 2. I have tried and cannot get the lines off the box unit...why won't they screw off, how do I get them unhooked from this box?

That is the proportioning valve or metering valve or hold off valve, what ever you want to call it. Go with the proportioning valve. It adjusts pressure to ther 4 wheels to keep the brake pressures correct to each wheel. The lines should just unscrew. There is probably a lot of rust on them. Some penetrant on the threads and a good line wrench should do it. If you are replacing the lines anyway, cut the lines and use a 6 point socket on the nut.
