I'm having issues replacing the fuel pump on a 1999 Ford Contour (2.5L V6 - 110,000 mi - 1999 - built Feb 99 as that made a diff in what fuel pump I needed). I've got the rear seat flipped up, got the retaining ring off, and I've disconnected the electrical & the two lines. However when I try to pull the whole assembly out, it won't come out as it seems it's too big to come out of the access hole. The access hole is approx 5" diameter, however the whole apparatus is approx 6". Am I just stupid, or do I have to drop the fuel tank to complete the work?

1999 Ford Contour 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 106000 miles

I got a bad tank of Gas and my fuel pump is only working at 20psi ( Going to see if the strainer sock is clogged vs actual weak pump) but if my pump needs replaced this will be my second Fuel Pump for the vehicle in under 4 years. Question is this:
There is an Assembly fuel pump that runs around $400-500 dollars. The last time I was told I needed to buy the assembly which included the float, strainer, etc (Had to do with my vehicle number) but why can I not just buy the pump and replace the pump on the assembly? Is there anything restricting me from doing this, or is there a form-factor issue? $500 vs $100 is a huge difference especially if it will fail every time a bad load of gas is delivered.

I only see pump replacement as a unit for Contour, but these pumps normal burn out quick if you drive with under 1/4 of a tank...heat is the problem, gas cools the pump, and if enough is kept in the tank, it will last longer.

the system will re-pressurize by cycling key on/off a few times after new pump fitted ..

FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE
Remove fuel cap to release fuel tank pressure. Remove relief valve service port cap. Relief valve service port is located on fuel supply manifold. Using Fuel Pressure Gauge (T80L-9974-B), release fuel pressure from relief valve (Schrader valve).
If fuel pressure gauge is not available, disconnect electrical connector to IFS switch. For IFS switch location, see INERTIA FUEL SHUTOFF (IFS) SWITCH LOCATION table under INERTIA FUEL SHUTOFF (IFS) SWITCH. Crank engine for 15 seconds to reduce system pressure.

replaced fuel pump gas filter changed spark plugs and wires but u can smell gas and still has no power . runs okay for awhile then starts to bog down. car is a 97 ford contour 4-cylinder. I took ignition coil from 2000 contour to see if that might help and put in 1997 contour it fit and gave it some power but still needs more.

Engine Mechanical problem
1996 Ford Contour 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 150000 miles

I have a 1996 ford contour and it had a hose on it that was leaking water. My brother drove it and it got hot and shut off on him. We replaced that hose (knew this wouldn't fix it the damage was further done then that) but then it wouldn't start. I took it to a local mechanic and he said that my fuel pump was out? So i replaced the fuel pump, and no luck. The car turns over fine and everything but it just won't start. I don't think it cracked a head or warped the cylinders in it though.

What color smoke? Black=too much gas, white= head or head gasket, blue= oil. Check your oil dipstick, you may find gas in the oil from cranking the engine without it starting, a new oil filter and fresh oil is needed, also was the fuel pressure tested after the fuel pump was installed? You may need a new fuel pressure regulator. Or the return line is blocked.
Fuel pump pressure is 30-45psi with key on engine off. Fuel pressure and regulator test:
FUEL PRESSURE 1. Visually inspect fuel system, including fuel lines, connections, injectors and electrical connections. Ensure Inertia Fuel Shutoff (IFS) switch is not tripped. Check condition of battery and fuses. Ensure fuel level in tank is sufficient. 2. Turn ignition off. Release fuel pressure. Install fuel pressure gauge. Start engine and increase engine speed to 2500 RPM. If engine will not start, cycle ignition switch several times. Measure and record fuel pressure. For fuel pressure specifications, see FUEL PRESSURE SPECIFICATIONS article. If fuel pressure is within specification, go to next step. If fuel pressure is not within specification, go to CIRCUIT TEST HC in TESTS W/CODES - 2.0L article for fuel system diagnosis. 3. With fuel pressure gauge still installed, cycle ignition switch on and off several times. Record fuel pressure. If fuel pressure is at least 25 psi (172 kPa) after one minute with ignition off, system is capable of maintaining fuel pressure. If fuel pressure is not at least 25 psi after one minute with ignition off, check for leaking fuel injectors or fuel pressure regulator. WARNING: ALWAYS relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel injection-related component. DO NOT allow fuel to contact engine or electrical components. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE .

Service and Repair

WARNING: Do not smoke, carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited, resulting in possible personal injury.

CAUTION: Fuel supply lines will remain pressurized for long periods of time after engine shut down. This pressure must be relieved before servicing of the fuel system is begun. A valve is provided on the throttle body for this purpose. Remove the air cleaner and relieve system pressure by using Rotunda pressure gauge tool T80L-9974-A or equivalent and drain the system through the drain tube.

REMOVAL

1. Perform the fuel pressure release procedure.
2. Remove rear seat cushion.
3. Remove plastic grommet from floor pan.
4. Disconnect fuel pump module electrical connector.
5. Disconnect fuel and vapor return tubes from fuel pump module by compressing tabs on both sides of each nylon push connect fitting and easing the fuel line out of fuel pump module.
6. Turn fuel pump locking retainer ring counterclockwise using fuel tank sender wrench and remove fuel pump locking retainer ring.
7. Remove fuel pump module and cover fuel pump module opening in fuel tank.

NOTE: After fuel pump module removal, immediately cover fuel pump module opening in fuel tank in order to prevent fuel system contamination.

8. Remove fuel pump module O-ring seal and discard.

INSTALLATION

1. Clean fuel pump module mounting flange and fuel pump module mounting surface and O-ring seal groove on fuel tank.

NOTE: When cleaning fuel pump module mounting surface on fuel tank, use caution to prevent any foreign material from entering fuel system.

2. Apply a light coat of Premium Long-Life Grease meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B on a new O-ring seal to hold it in place and install it into the O-ring seal groove on the fuel tank.
3. Install fuel pump module carefully to ensure that filter is not damaged. Ensure that locating keys are in keyways and O-ring seal remains in place.
4. Hold fuel pump module in place and install fuel pump locking retainer ring finger-tight. Ensure that all locking tabs are under fuel tank lock ring tabs.
5. Secure fuel pump locking retainer ring by rotating clockwise using fuel tank sender wrench until fuel pump locking retainer ring rests against stops.
6. Connect fuel and vapor return tubes to fuel pump module.
7. Connect fuel pump module electrical connector.
8. Install plastic grommet in floor pan.
9. Install rear seat cushion.
10. Install fuel pressure gauge.
11. Turn ignition switch to RUN position for three seconds repeatedly (5 to 10 times) until pressure gauge reads at least 270 kPa (30 psi) . Check for leaks at fittings.
12. Remove pressure gauge, start engine and recheck for leaks.
There you go.

The bottom part of the seat, is in place simply by two plastic clamp things, just have to pull and fiddle around with them for it to release, they are toward the front and sides of the seat. Now that it's out of the way, follow the rest of the steps below..

Are they the quick connect lines? If so, there should be a horse shoe shaped clip that holds it in place. Remove the pin and it should disconnect.

I recently had my fuel pump replaced in the car. When I next filled the car with gas the gas began pouring from the bottom of the car. I took the car in again to be fixed. This time the car held the fuel, but every time it gets to 1/4 tank the car begins to violently shake and stall out. When I took it in to get looked at the mechanic told me he couldn't find anything wrong. . . so what is going on?

I have a 96 Contour Sport that is running rough and stalling in park and all through driving range. I have replaced the fuel pump, several fuel filters, coil pack, plug wires, plugs, and rebuilt the injector wiring harness. Sometimes it will start and run fine for a few minutes. Then it seems that the engine is starving out for a second, start to stall, then the rpms shoot up, transmission catches and it continues on. It will do this for several repeats, then run normal another few miles. Also, if I don't shift to Neutral at stops, it will almost certainly stall and take several attempts to restart. I am at a loss for the cause, and this being the daughter's college car, I would like to get it up and running well...

is there any codes in the system??? we need them

sounds like more of a vacuum leak than any of the other parts you through at it.

you should have someone look at it for you as it sounds like you are frustrated. get a second opinion then you can repair it with confidence
