car won't go into reverse or accelerate fast

1999 ford contour sedan 108,000 miles
I got this car from someone who buys them at the auto auction b/c I was strapped for cash

The overdrive light keeps blinking on and off
I think the filter may need to be changed and I have a friend who is going to check it tomorrow
