2000 Ford Contour noise while accelerating

2000 Ford Contour 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

I have 71000 miles on my ford contour. It makes a weird metallic noise while accelerating for 1 second when the RPM needle goes past 2000 RPM. What could be causing this and how do I fix this

I have also noted that the noise occurs only when the car is in the 4th gear or 5th gear and the RPM goes past 2000 RPM. After the needle crosses 2100 RPM the noise disappears. The noise is higher in the fifth gear. The speed in 4th gear is approximately 40 mph and in 5th the speed is 50 mph when the noise occurs. The noise appears to be comming from the rear of the car. Would someone pleaseeeeeeeeeeee respond to this question.
