1999 Ford Contour Two Wheel Drive Automatic 136000 miles

I had my car towed to a small family owned garage and he said my timing belt was shot, but he also said I have whats called an interference motor and that most likely the timing belt did damage to my valve heads, he is unsure if damage has been done and wont be able to find out if there is damage or the extent until he is givin the ok to repair the car. He estimates 1000.00. Does this sound legit?
