1998 Contour shifting problems

This car does not shift through the gears untill the RPMs are way up and even then the shift is slow and sluggish... (4-speed auto) Any suggestions ???

It could be an O2 sensor in your fuel injection system. Did you check engine light come on? Have you had your timing chains checked or changed out recently?
