i have a ford contour that needs a transmission i heard that i need to find an exact replacement transmission for this car my question is what am i looking for to find an exact replacment i heard its the tag numbers on the bell housing what numbers am i looking at and what should i look for in a replacment unit

yes it is a cd4e i knew that i went looking for a junk yard replacement and one person told me that if i dont get the right tanny it wont work i heard that the electronics are differant so i need to know what should i look for when i find a used tranny i thought you can identify the proper tranny but the identfication plate on the bell housing?
