WHEN IT GETS UP TO ABOUT 55 MPH IT GOES INTO OVERDRIVE THEN IT SEEMS LIKE ITS TRYING TO GO INTO A LOWER GEAR BACK AND FORTH. JUST WONDERING IF I CHANGED THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER IF THAT WOULD HELP.IF NOT WHAT WOULD BE THE PROBLEM?

My Mercury Mystique was having problems off and on for a couple of years. The transmission would begin to go in and out of gear and in and out of OD. The OD light would begin to blink. I finally found out it was a sensor. I believe it's called the transmission range sensor. It is only available at the dealer and I paid $67 for it. There are two screws holding it in. It takes about 10min to install it. It seems mine was damaged when a small coolant hose began to leak on it. I replaced the hose some time ago and didn't realize that was the root of my transmission problem!
