1992 Ford Contour 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

A friend said if the timing belt on my 92 escort ever broke , the engine was trash. My belt just broke...is this true, or can it be repaired?

Ford escort chance should be OK
replace the belt and do a compression test
I believe it should be OK
do the belt and start it only way to find out for sure
