Noises problem
1994 Ford Bronco V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic
----------------------------------------------------------------
I just bought at auction (yeah it was cheep) and the engine is knocking and seem under powered. Other than that runs good just a rough idle at times. I put in a can of engine restore and changed the oil with 10w -30 Synthetic Valvoline and it seemed to help but only slightly.

My thoughts it's got a bad lifter or other problem with a rod. What should I do to determine the issues?

Hi there,

I would first be checking the engine oil pressure and do a comp test to get a general over view of the engine. If it is a rod end knocking, you can often isolate it by killing a cylinder one at a time and when you hit the faulty cyl the knock drops off as there is a lot less pressure in the cylinder with the plug lead off. Start here.

based on the suggestion below I had a compression check done and no problems and oil pressure was good to. was told it seemed to be noise from cracked fly wheel. the real main seal is also leaking so is it better to pull the transmission to fix or the motor?

Also the transmission shifts hard after about 30 minutes of driving. fluid is full and color is good. is it likely that fluid and filter change on transmission will solve the problem?

Hi there,

If you believe the drive plate to be cracked, and this is quite possibly the cause of you noise, remove the transmission and with the drive plate off you can replace the pear main seal, also do a trans service as well as that would be the first place to check for your shift issue.
