1987 Ford Bronco shifting

The 4 speed overdrive transmission in my Bronco II is sometimes difficult to get into gear. The shifter had been removed and replaced and was loose on the transmission. Someone had stripped one of the capscrews so I replaced it. The fluid level was low and topping that off seemed to help but shifing into first gear still doesn't 'feel' quite right. Occasionally it crunches when I am placing it in that gear or feel spongy instead of positive when shifted into that position. The transmission is not noisy in operation and seems to function otherwise.
Any insights are greatly appreciated!

One common problem with these vehicles is the o-rings get hard over time. As a result, when you shift the gears, the fluid bypasses a piston in the valve body causing a rough or delayed shift. My recommendation would be to try changing the fluid with a new filter and adding an additive designed for seals in the transmission. It may help.
