is there an easier way to remove the engine without dropping the complete front assembly, including the front wheels? this seems like a lot of unecesary work.
thanks in advance for your help

yes if you take off the cylinder heads and transmission has to be backed up at least a foot so it wont break the seals and gears on the torque converter etc. you would then remove the radiator and possibly front cover and oil pan and hood and would need a hoist and three or four helpers to invert it as you raised the block out also be sure to remove the four nuts that hold the torque converter to the flywheel from the access window where the starter goes whereby keeping the torque converter seal from separating and leaking six quarts of fluid out continuously as your trying to work. you can move the converter an inch forward without it leaking
but when re installing the transmission it has to be supported on a transmission jack fully stable or you can crack the center seal housing, the torque converter will pull straight away from the transmission and come off, to put it in you insert and turn until it jumps forward twice.
