1997 Ford Aerostar ignition coil

The "check engine" light came on a couple months ago. Computer diagnostic indicated mis-fire on #5 cylinder. I installed new spark plugs & wires, engine ran fine for about 2,000 miles, but the "check engine" light reoccured. Computer diagnostic again indicates mis-fire on #5 cylinder. The mechanic suggested replacing the ignition coil. This doesn't make sense to me ... how does the ignition coil function? Can it affect only 1 out of 6 cylinders? Where is the coil located? Is it difficult to replace?

Vehicle has a 4.0 liter V-6.

The coil is what creates the spark / power for the spark plugs. It is hard to believe that a coil can pick and choose what cylender will have a problem. If you remove the spark plug from #5, what does it look like? Also, you may want to check the compression in that cylender to make sure it's not low.
