1983 Ford Aerostar Gear shift

I had my van in park, and when I came to put it in drive, the lever started to flop around whithout engaging the transmition. What could be broken it the system?

Hi:
It sounds like the linkage to shift the trans has come apart. You will need to check under the hood and under the van to check for this problem. Have a helper move the lever while you check.
