firing order

My 2002 hyundai sante fe has a skip. put new plugs in it and timing belt but still skips. Slight smoke from exhaust. How are the engine cylinders numbered??

Ok, I started out with the car rattling while in idle and the check engine light coming on. I took it to Autozone and had them scan it and they said it was a 5th cylinder misfire. They told me to check the coils, some kinda sensor and if that fails change the spark plugs and wires. Wasnt the coils, wasnt the sensor, so I switched the plugs and wires and now the car sounds like it wants to start, but pops and sounds like its backfiring. WHAT DID I DO!? I've only recently been working on cars so any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I fixed it! I had the firing order right but must not have torqued the plug right. I took everything apart then put it back again checking one last time. Turned the key and it started, but had a horrible clicking noise. Took it to Autozone and the guy said it sounded like my lifters. He told me to buy a can of seafoam and put half in the oil and half in the gas. Did it, still clicked, drove it home and still clicked. Came inside and read that you should let your engine idle for 5 minutes. Tried that and reved it once, sounded like it coughed and shook a little, 3 minutes later clicking went away. Drove it about 10 minutes an hour later and the check engine light came off! Still driving great about 20 miles in. Thanks for replying!
