Getting P228D code in conjunction with P016, P0011, and P0089. Would also get the notification of reduced engine power and traction control shut off. This led me to believe the fuel pressure regulator was bad. It on the high pressure fuel pump sold as one unit. My scanner showed the fuel pressure at the rail (gauge) 43.1 then fuel rail pressure 2169.6 PSI?

Hi,

The code indicates the fuel pressure is too high, which I believe you already know. Do me a favor. Here are a few diagnostics. Go through them and let me know what you find. If something fails during the test, I can direct you from that point.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-wiring

Circuit/System Testing

Remove the G18 High Pressure fuel pump
Verify the lobes on the camshaft do not have unusual wear or are worn.

If the loves have unusual wear or are worn, replace the camshaft.

If the lobes are ok:

Test or replace the G18 High Pressure fuel pump

Component Testing

Ignition off, disconnect the harness connector at the G18 High Pressure fuel pump

Note: The DMM and test leads must be calibrated to 0 ohms in order to prevent misdiagnosis.

Test for 9-11 Ohms at 77°F between the high control circuit, terminal 2, and the low control circuit, terminal 1.

If not between 9-11 ohms, replace the high pressure fuel pump.

If between 9-11 ohms:

Test for infinite resistance between each terminal and the G18 High pressure fuel pump housing.

If less than infinite resistance, replace the high pressure fuel pump.

If infinite resistance

All ok
Repair instructions
Perform the diagnostic repair verification after completing the diagnostic procedure

Fuel injection fuel rail pressure sensor replacement.
Fuel Pump Replacement
Intake camshaft and valve lifter replacement
Perform the fuel rail pressure relief valve reset procedure if supported on the scan tool.

Let me know what you find or if you have questions.

Take care and God Bless,

Joe

Thank you so much for the information. I will start these tonight after work and report my findings hopefully with a clear answer of what's wrong.

Pulled the pump but doing know how i would see the lobes unless I tore the cover off. DMM I think is junk because i couldn't get a good reading to save my life. Other Dmm wouldn't budge of 1. Tested what i believe is the fuel pressure release valve which read about 9.5ohms which could be the problem if my meter read that right.

Hi,

The 9.5 ohms is which pins?. And you would need to remove the cover to see the lobes. Did all other tests fall within spec or were you not able to get a good reading?

Let me know.

The 9.5 was just the resistance on the fuel pump itself. What pins after you referring to? Off the ecm? I assumed you were referring to checking the ohms off the connector going directly into the g18 hpfp.

If I pull the cover do I have to replace the gasket. Those are pretty expensive? Also what pins are you talking about testing? I tested the electrical connector the hooks into the hpfp. I did not test any pins of the ECM or anything in the fuse box.
Just looking for some clarity before I just throw an expensive hpfp at it and then of course be frustrated that wasn't the problem.

That is what I was getting 9.5ohms off of.

Sorry I forgot to mention the oil was low and after replacing and clearing codes the p0011 did not come back just the p228d, p0089, and p0016. I know what all of them are but didn't know if that would help narrow it down. Also the dtc that caused freeze frame data was the p228D code.

Before removing things, is there any noise coming from the pump that could indicate a lobe problem on the cam?

Not that i have noticed. Honestly tuned only thing i have noticed before this happened was it would stall but only when applying very very light throttle. For example when I pull into my driveway and need just a little acceleration to pull into my parking space or while in line in a drive through and lightly pressing theft throttle to move up. I haven't really noticed anything else.

I would think if the cam was an issue, you would have heard a tapping or knocking. I have to be honest, it sounds like the pump is bad. You mentioned having trouble with the DMM. Were you able to complete the diagnostics I listed above?

Let me know.

No because i don't know what pins I'm supposed to check unless your talking about the connector that hooks into the hpfp.

I have no problem checking the camshaft just didn't have a ton of money for a lot. so i was curious if i had to replace the gaskets just because i removed the cover. I'm sure it's probably recommended but didn't know if always necessary.

I just wanted to thank you for all your help. I don't typically reach out to others as I research and try to learn on my own. This is one of those things that im finding very little information on. I went ahead and ordered a new hpfp along with a camshaft position sensor. If these don't fix it i guess i will have a spare fuel pump and will then need to look at the camshaft. I don't believe they are bad because I don't hear then and know this car had been really well maintained (which i know doesn't always mean anything). It had 103,000 miles on it and I bought it at 97,000. First thing i did was throw some new iridium plugs in it and check things over. This car is a bit of a learning curve for me because of the added battery and electric motor. I ordered my parts because I can get them cheaper online but I will message you once I have replaced them so if anyone comes across this thread maybe it could assist them. You have been a blessing and i appreciate all the info and feedback you have given me.

Brad,

First, you are very welcome. If I had the truck in my shop, I would have followed the diagnostics I sent you. That would have led me to replace the pump. I hope that takes care of it for you.

Let me know when you can. Also, please feel free to come back anytime in the future if you need help. You're always welcome.

Take care and I'll watch for your findings.

Here is another one but it's the sound the motor is making like you said the lobes on the front camshaft.

No that's weekday I'll be working on this week. Been researching and finding timing chain issues as well but i don't know if that would affect the high pressure fuel pump. Seems like it would be more related to camshaft. If i were to find its camshaft I'd it better thi replace intake and exhaust since i'm in there?

Lobes appeared to have normal wear. Timing chain felt firm. I did find a piece of plastic inside close go the timing chain shaft which i circled in the pictures before. I'm at a complete loss.

Don't know if that's the piece that broke off. The chain seems tight though unless chipped or missing tooth?

That looks like a piece from one the guide. Actually, the exact portion you circled in the last pic. As far as the cam, there is nothing obvious that I'm seeing. However, without using a mic, it's hard to tell.
