Hi, I tried helping a neighbor remove his fan clutch. He tried with a hammer using a viscous fan clutch kit and I tried with a breaker bar, but the bolt appeared to be stripped. Do you have any suggestions on how to remove the fan clutch with a now stripped bolt? That is the problem as the YouTube video has the exact same car with the exact same problem. Can I file the bolt back to a square shape? Do I need to use a cutting power tool to get that bolt off? There is only so much room to remove it and I don't want him paying a shop $600.

Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so I can tell for sure what's going on.. You can upload it here with your response. I understand the challenge you're facing in removing the stripped bolt on the fan clutch of a 2002 Mercedes-Benz ML320. While it can be frustrating, there are a few options you can consider to remove the bolt:

File the Bolt: If the bolt is only partially stripped, you can attempt to file the damaged areas of the bolt to restore some grip. Use a file to carefully remove the stripped portions and try again to remove the fan clutch. However, be cautious not to file too much, as it may weaken the bolt.

Use a Bolt Extractor: Bolt extractors, also known as screw extractors, are designed to remove stripped or damaged bolts. These specialized tools are typically used with a wrench or socket set. Place the bolt extractor on the stripped bolt and turn it counterclockwise to remove it. Be sure to choose the appropriate size extractor for the bolt.

Cutting Power Tool: As a last resort, if the above methods don't work, you can consider using a cutting power tool like an angle grinder or reciprocating saw to cut a groove or notch into the stripped bolt. This will provide a new gripping surface for a wrench or pliers to turn and remove the bolt.
