fan belt screeching

will the car not start? if you can get a wrench on the big nut try to turn it over by hand. one way then the other. If the spark plugs are out will be much easier.

oh and btw why don't you try a new belt and tensioner if old one screeches or replace the belt and adjust with a belt tension gauge if you have one.

AS FAR AS THE CRANK PULLEY GOES, IT DOES NOT SPIN FREELY LIKE THE OTHERS DO WITH YOUR FINGERS, BECAUSE YOU WILL HAVE TO TURN THE CRANK AND MOVE THE PISTONS. IF THE CAR CRANKS AND RUNS THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CRANK SHAFT PULLEY, IT IS WHAT POWERS THE BELT (AND OTHER PULLEYS)!

by no means spray any chemical on belt, that will make the belt destroy itself. just do as I h ad said, replace belt and tensioner recommended is 60,000 mi if it screechs then something has gotten on it like oil or antifreeze or tensioner is bad or both.
