failure in gear selection

The transmission from first to other gear is not in sequence. There is a long delay in transmitting and sometimes it does not go beyond first for a long time. Then when it does it is like a bang and then a jerking movement then it will relapse to neutral again.

Also, the fuel consumption is high, even before this new problem. I have just changed the catalytic converter, yet the problem seems to persist.
