Hi, can any one help please? I have the car listed above petrol, mk1. It has just failed its MOT and I only have about a week to return it for a free re test. It failed its MOT on emissions on tick over. The MOT man said when he revs it the emissions are okay, he also said it is ticking over at 1,200 and should be about 800. Lately the car is very hard to start from cold, just like the choke is not working. Does any one have any ideas please?

It sounds like you have a vacuum leak causing both issues. Here is a guide to help us find and fix the issue:

Please run down this guide and report back.

Hi Ken, thank you for your reply. I have tried the carburetor cleaner but have had no luck. Also found out my car has single port injection and has no choke like a carburetor. I noticed that a vacuum leak says car runs poor and is hesitant, but my car is not. Car runs well just tick over to high and high emissions just on tick over and poor cold start. Is there any other things it could be? Thanks, Jim

High emissions can be caused by a misfire or a bad oxygen sensor, MAP/MAF sensor which ever you car has. Also if the catalytic converter is worn out it will cause the issue. Here is a guide to help you check the catalytic converter:
